Researchers Identify Bipolar Disorder GeneHealth News — Researchers at Sweden’s Sahlgrenska Academy, by way of studying more than 50,000 people, have managed to identify a gene that is believed to have a strong link with bipolar disorder.

Previous studies have shown that the risk of developing bipolar disorder is largely due to genetics, but scientists have been unable to pin down exactly which genes are involved.

Sahlgrenska Academy’s study has now identified one gene in particular that is linked to a calcium

But now a small group of researchers, once unaware of each other’s work, are connecting and searching for answers. They began by focusing on an unlikely place: the eyes. And in the process, sensory deficits and other anomalies in both visual and auditory processing—as well as some promising treatments—are coming to light.

Canadian football hero Sandy Annunziata knows that victims of bullying often feel tense, anxious, and afraid. He understands that bullying can affect concentration in school, leading to truancy. And he gets it when young people suffer from low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness and social isolation, leading them to become withdrawn and depressed.

Annunziata strives to empower today’s youth, to protect them from bullies and what could happen if, in extreme cases  and in a depressed state, they feel compelled to take drastic measures by seeking revenge or even attempting suicide.

The former offensive guard and two-time Grey Cup champion began his journey as an advocate for good mental health while playing for the Toronto Argonauts in 2004.
